I am Christy…I live in Dallas, Texas. Can I tell you how fired up I am about this ministry? This ministry which is based in Tyler, Texas has the potential to help unwed pregnant mothers all around the Country! How great is that? I have been involved in the fundraising part of The Magdalene Home and while doing this I came across a verse that really hit home to me: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west… Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth.” – Isaiah 43:5-6. I feel like the Lord was talking to me! I have been saying over and over again that everyone can be part of this ministry no matter where you live. The Magdalene Home will eventually be helping women from the east and to the west! So, a little about my story. My Mom had me at the age of seventeen. Seventeen years YOUNG. She did marry my father, but it didn’t last. I have thought about how things could have been different for her if she had this kind of resource available to her. She raised me and did the best that she could do…but let’s face it…she struggled emotionally and financially. She was a kid raising a kid! I imagine what she could have accomplished if she was being nurtured by a place like The Magdalene Home. A place that would provide her with spiritual guidance, life skills, and academic preparation if desired. You see, my Mom went back to school after having me. She did graduate high school. She went on to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in her 40’s and her Master’s degree at the age of 50. While that is a HUGE accomplishment, I can’t help but wonder what could have been for her and me if she could have done these things much earlier in life. The Magdalene Home will help these women do just that! Do you want to make a difference? If so inquire about how you can volunteer or better yet donate. The Magdalene Home is a 501c(3) organization that relies solely on the generous donations of people.
Life begins when a heart starts beating. Regardless of age or circumstance, the beginning of life is a gift to be cherished. Most women have an innate sense of this, but sadly, many lack the support necessary to celebrate and appreciate the blessing. The Magdalene Home is nothing short of a breath of fresh air for women and girls that find themselves pregnant with seemingly limited options. An all inclusive resource, the crisis pregnancy home provides everything a woman needs to complete a healthy pregnancy, from the basics of shelter, nutrition, and medical care to life and job skill training, counseling and adoptive services. A private facility with confidential care guaranteed and loving encouragement as needed, this home is a necessity to Tyler, TX, and a nation of desperate mothers. Call or click to donate or volunteer and have a direct effect on the women carrying the next generation.
As we come upon our first fund raiser it is so exciting to share the story of The Magdalene Home with our community. The Celebrity Pancake Dinner is set for Sunday, October 5th from 5-7pm at The Diner. Tickets are $10.00 with the added value of a drawing for and iPad mini with each ticket purchase. Our goal is to raise $10,000.00 to help with the purchase of a home. Please join us for our inaugural event!!
The percentage of births to unmarried women has increased markedly in recent years. Births outside of marriage have many disadvantages, especially to the children. Children who are born to unmarried parents are more likely to live in poverty and to have poor developmental outcomes (1). The mothers often lack networks to support them during their pregnancy when spiritual counseling, medical care, emotional care, and financial assistance are essential. Sometimes they think abortion is their only option.
I am the owner of a family law firm in Smith County. It saddens me when mothers seek my assistance just days after giving birth because CPS has taken their children. Having a child placed “in the system” is extremely detrimental to both the mother and the child. The mothers have the emotional and financial stress right after birth of dealing with CPS, which is a nightmare. Often the mothers lack the financial resources needed to get their children back. Fighting CPS is difficult and expensive. The children are placed with a family who may be taking in foster children simply for added income to their family. If the mother’s rights are terminated and the child has any medical issues and/or handicaps, the child may be difficult to place for adoption. As such, that child may be in the system for the rest of their childhood and possibly be placed in multiple different homes.
Had these mothers had the support and guidance of The Magdalene Home, there would have been a different outcome. The Magdalene Home offers the spiritual, medical, emotional and financial assistance that is so needed by a woman during her pregnancy. Life and job skills are also available to help the women get back on their feet after the birth, whether the mother decides to keep the child or place their child for adoption.
